Are you feeling a little jaded and tired of chasing after deadlines, rushing out designs and working late nights with coffee running through your veins? (Maybe we exaggerate… but only slightly) Have you ever missed the bonding, exchanges of great ideas, cultural exploration and just the wonderful melting pot of the university life, when your focus was learning and experimenting? Sometimes working life can suck the life out of you… without you noticing it. Which is why it is a great reason (and excuse) for you to Recharge yourself!
And the GREAT NEWS is…
You are exclusively invited to the inaugural Design Life event that will be held in the beautiful island of Bali, Indonesia, on 4th – 6th December 2009. The perfect place to recharge, rejuvenate and reinvigorate! And we would love for you to join us.
Before we go into the details of Design Life, let us share with you how the idea for the event came about…
On a Sunday afternoon in February 2007, John Andrews (Ex. Professor in RMIT Interior Design) was in Bali for a holiday. Because of our common desire to catch up and get reacquainted, another RMIT Interior Design Alumi, Hadi, flew from Jakarta to Bali to meet up with John and us. It was all very impromptu and unplanned but it turned out to be a very heart warming and enriching experience. Over meals, drinks, lot of laughter and great conversation we were refreshed and rejuvenated again. It was beautiful.
Whenever we travelled overseas to Singapore, Malaysia, Korea or other countries we would always try to meet up with other design alumni and friends. Sadly, we realized that even those living in the same country seldom meet up due to hectic work schedules. That prompted us to organise Design Life. After many back and forth discussions and proposals with various people, we finally have the full support of RMIT. Design Life was born!
Design Life is open for all designers from various disciplines as well as RMIT’s School of Architecture and Design alumni. If you’re from Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Industrial Design, fashion…then Design Life is definitely for you.
We are expecting people from Singapore, Malaysia, Hongkong, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Australia to join us. You will get to mingle with other professionals from similar, if not relevant industries, in a casual and informal setting.
So, if you are like us and feel you need to re-invigorate your minds, we are planning the following stimulants:
presentations of YOUR work to peer review (where else are you getting good feedback?)
exhibition + catalogue of YOUR work in a prestigious Ubud Gallery (a beautiful space)
international guest speakers (all very interesting! We are excited to have Made Wijaya, Richard Hassell & Wong Mun Summ to be speaking at the event about their Design Life!)
RMIT visitors (some of YOUR Ex. Professors: Sand Helsel, Andrea Mina, Ross Mcleod are all coming!!!)
Workshops (We are planning a range of workshops using unique local natural materials that have made Bali’s resorts so famous worldwide!)
a range of tours and visits (to some of the most legendary resorts, as well as uniquely designed places using interesting materials such as bamboo… the list goes on!!!)
good conversation (over food + drinks)
parties (for good fun)
Apart from participating in the event, we will also be inviting all RMIT Architecture + Design Alumni to submit their current work for the Exhibition. This is open to all Alumni (even if you are unable to participate in the event itself). Ross Mcleod (RMIT staff) will be in contact with details of the exhibition, catalogue and Alumni speakers soon.
Bali is well known for its beauty and great for the mind, body and soul. The friendly, simple and open mindedness of the people and their unique Hindu culture, the beautiful beaches, mountains and luscious rice paddy fields, the stunning sunsets, these are some of the many positive and unique traits of Bali.
Ubud with its beautiful landscapes and being the cultural center of Bali was chosen, not only because of the inherent beauty of the place, but more importantly it vibrates the positive energy of sharing, of giving and receiving, of learning of new cultures, that is significant to the spirit of Design Life itself!
RMIT is a major sponsor for Design Life. They appreciate the value of this event and has generously sponsored a portion of the expenses involved in organising Design Life. Due to their support we are able to keep the cost of the event to a minimum and thus enabling more people to come for the event.
However, we are currently still looking for additional sponsorship for the event. So if you know of anyone or organization that might be interested to sponsor design event like this, please forward their contact to designlife09@gmail.com so we can follow up. We welcome all sponsorship in the form of cash as well as goods (wine, beer, etc.)
You might be aware that the average trip to Bali would cost around US$ 400 - US$ 600. But we have worked hard to find and arrange the best deal for you. So for that or even less, you get to meet old friends, make new friends, bond, party with like-minded people, as well as recharge your creative juices. Design Life is an All Expenses Paid experience, once you arrive in Bali. And of course, if you want to extend your stay, Bali is a wonderful place to get some much-needed rest & relax. So why not? Recharge, Rest & Relax all in one trip!
Your total investment for participating in the event (excluding airfares) is US$ 230 inclusive of all meals, workshops, visits, lectures, international guest speakers, exhibition and publication of alumni work, transport and airport transfers* … and parties!
For those of you who need accommodation in Ubud, accommodation for 3 star hotel with AC is US$ 80 per night (inclusive of breakfast). If you do not mind to share the room with someone else, that means you only have to pay US$ 120 for 3 nights of accommodation in Ubud! For all that this is a bargain!
Spaces are is limited. We will need your confirmation with registration form submitted by 15th October 2009. To confirm your participation, please register online at www.designlife2009.com/registration.php.
It is our hope that this event will be the start of a great tradition, a significant event that you can be a part of and help shape!
We look forward to your support of this event, and to seeing you as part of Design Life come December in Bali!
Thank you!
Warmest regards,
Organiser for Design Life Bali 2009
